About

Matthew enjoys a quiet life as a filmmaker and photographer, living beside and constantly enjoying the pristine coastline of Yanchep with his wife and four daughters. His film work grew from a passion of capturing skateboarding, surf and snow culture, which then developed into a career where he has now worked with the likes of Jeep, World Surf League and Thrasher Magazine.

Matthew has a passion for bringing together local communities by hosting short film premiere’s and photography exhibitions and this is something he plans to continue into the future. Matthew’s work is emotive and focuses on natural beauty, genuine people and the joy bringing activities many of us pursue regularly.

Form & Flow

‘Form & Flow’ is a short film documenting the creative spaces of Warrick Palmateer (ceramicist) and Jake Harman (surfboard shaper) in the same set of units here at home in Yanchep. The film delves into not only their crafts but their relationship to each other and their shared link to surfing as well as some challenging times from the past few years. The film features a completely original score by Bailey Thompson (Sunsick band). The film premiered locally in November, 2023 and was an Official Selection for the 2024 WA Made Film Festival, 2024 Bilbao Surf Film Festival & the 2024 Oahu Surf Film Festival.

On The Land

On The Land is a 16mm short film showcasing the work and processes of one of Australia's most renowned wood-fired ceramicists. We spent a few days out on his property in York in the freezing cold to document the wood firing process as well as time in his Palmyra studio capturing the building of the pieces. Stewart, together with his wife Trish, grow trees on their property which then becomes the fire wood, he digs and mixes his own clay, everything is a closed loop and the results are astounding. This film and Stewart's work were showcased at Bunbury Regional Art Gallery and John Curtin Gallery here at home in Western Australia, Stewart won the prestigious 2023 John Stringer Prize for his work. The entire film was shot on a Super 16 converted Bolex H16 Rex 5, we shot through four rolls of Kodak 16mm film, 3x 250D & 1x 50D. The film was processed by Rewind Photo Lab & scanned by Memory Lab Film.
